The irrepressible Shobhaa De skins and de-bones Indian society and politics
Shobhaa De epitomises spunk.
She’s sassy and stands up for her beliefs. She’s intelligent and hyper-aware. She’s cheeky and untrammelled.
But above all, she was and remains individualistic in a domain that celebrates the cookie-cutter.
On the Algebra stage she took on critics and stereotypes in trademark Shobhaa style, and tackled both the personal and the political incisively, and courageously. But it was when she spoke of Mohammed Akhlaq – lynched to death on rumours of having beef in his home – that she was perhaps more vulnerable than we have ever seen her in public, moved almost to tears at the heartbreak and horror of the family, and the unmaking of India.
Shobhaa is one of the country’s most feisty commentators – and she’s at the top of her game.
