The irrepressible Nayantara Sahgal talks love, power and why she’s been a resistance figure all her life

It’s a conversation that consumes our current national imagination.

And there are few people better equipped, ideologically and intellectually, to take on the thorny questions of nationalism and political engagement than Nayantara Sahgal – Jawaharlal Nehru’s niece, Vijaylakshmi Pandit’s daughter, Indira’s cousin, and unshakeably her own person.

Nayantara’s legacy, rich as it is, is not her calling card. She has not been remote eyewitness to history, but a fierce participant in it.

Her courage and convictions, her relentless pursuit of her ideals – calling out Indira Gandhi at the height of the Emergency even as she calls out the current political dispensation – were on display at Algebra as she spoke passionately about Award Wapsi, secularism and her fight for justice.
