She’s engaged. She’s smart. And she will not be silenced. Gurmehar Kaur is an example of democracy gone right
It’s unusual – and encouraging – to find your experience of someone exceed your expectations of them.
We knew even before she took the stage that Gurmehar Kaur was spunky, smart, and engaged with the world in a manner atypical of most her age.
Onstage at Algebra, though, she proved she could hold her own in the face of tough questions and provocative challenges to her worldview – a worldview that doesn’t have many answers but stays true to her beliefs about free speech, about online trolling, and above all about the necessity to make one’s voice heard above the din of collective opinion.
“Don’t you believe that in the desire to enable free speech, we give too much voice to people who may not deserve that space?,” asked someone in the audience.
“What choice do we have? Stay quiet?”
