IF YOU are Waheeda Rehman, art must necessarily follow life. Her youth spun legends that still persist – great and ill-starred love; great success. But that’s not the only reason Waheedaji can still stop audiences, at 75, with a mere cameo. Her grace operates the coup, not her back story. She is more selective with her films now, but Rakeysh Mehra, who directed her in Rang De Basanti and Dilli 6, says, “She has a timeless quality. In her mind she is very young. She never asks for special concessions. I never saw her miss a beat or come even two minutes late for a call time.” Mumbai may be home, but when she’s not acting, farming in Bengaluru is her passion.
